The Television Critics Association (TCA), a media organization with more than 200 professional TV critics and journalists from the United States and Canada, today announced nominations for its 2013 TCA Awards. The 2013 TCA Awards recognize outstanding television programming in the 2012-2013 season, honoring actors, producers and programs in a variety of categories including news and information, youth, reality, drama and comedy achievements.
The winners of the 29th Annual TCA Awards will be announced at the invitation-only presentation on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, as part of the group’s bi-annual industry conference.
The nominations for current programming are spread across all four broadcast networks — ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox — PBS, 13 cable networks and the Internet streaming service Netflix. FX leads the way with seven nominations; CBS, NBC and HBO each have six; and AMC has five.
The nominees include a number of past winners — Louis C.K., Bryan Cranston and shows ranging from “Mad Men” to “Game of Thrones” and “The Daily Show” to “The Big Bang Theory.”
But there are also a number of first-time nominees, including “Orphan Black” and its star, Tatiana Maslany, “The Glee Project” and “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.”
Last year’s Program of the Year, “Game of Thrones,” is once again nominated in that category. The nominees include the first-ever nod for an online programming outlet — Netflix’s “House of Cards,” which is also nominated for Outstanding New Program.
“These were not easy choices for our 200-plus members,” said TCA President Candace Havens. “The past TV season was filled with deserving people and programs, and these are the cream of the crop.”
In addition to recognizing the year’s finest programming, the TCA Awards bestow a Heritage Award trophy to one long-standing program that has culturally or socially impacted society. This year, the TCA members have nominated some of TV’s most memorable series with CBS’s “All In the Family”; ABC’s “Lost” and “Twin Peaks;” and NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” and “Star Trek.”
The organization also presents a Career Achievement Award to an individual who has influenced television through his or her work on the small screen. Nominees include producer/writer James L. Brooks, director/producer James Burrows, late-night talk show host Jay Leno, actor William Shatner, and reporter/anchorwoman Barbara Walters.
