Had enough of mindless summer ‘blockbuster movies’ and looking for something refreshing, original, redeeming and hopeful. Then you might want  to check out ‘Brigsby Bear’ Directed by Dave McCary and written by Kevin Costello and Kyle Mooney.

The movie opens with James (Kyle Mooney) living with his parents in an underground bunker supposedly from the toxic environment that has destroyed the earth and the only way to step outside is to wear a protective gas mask. His daily routine is always the same; having dinner with his parents as they pray and shake hands, then he gets to watch his show ‘Brigsby Bear and then it’s generators off and lights out.

However one night James ventures outside the bunker and his world is turned upside down. Everything James has learned in the last twenty five years living a solitary life with his parents is put to the test. When James finds out he was abducted as a child by Ted (Mark Hamill) and April (Jane Adams) it doesn’t seem to faze him and once he is reunited with his birth parents the only thing that matters is for him to continue to watch his show ‘Brigsby Bear’.  His kidnapped parents have treated him well even if his social skills were never developed which makes for much humor in the film without being condescending or silly. His real parents( played by Michaela Watkins and Matt Walsh)  do a great job attempting to bond with the child they have always loved and approach their roles with just the right amount of pain, love and insecurity. We can feel their struggle as they try to help James adapt to a normal life.

They soon realize they need to embrace James’s childhood fantasy if they are to help him transition into society. And once James learns that his favorite bear was an entire production made just for him by his kidnapper father, he insists on making a movie to bring ‘Brigsby Bear’ to life for all to share in the magic.

‘Brigsby Bear’ is a film full of heart and at it’s core we can learn how to find love and forgiveness in the most unlikely situations in life.

‘Brigsby Bear’ opens in theaters July 28th , 2017.
