Vin Diesel’s Riddick May Not Break 20M Weekend
FRIDAY 1 PM UPDATE: Hollywood once again is determined to churn out unnecessary sequels and threequels. In this case, blame Vin Diesel who now owns the role and is keeping the sci-fi franchise on life support after leveraging a lot of his assets simply to earn coin. Universal is releasing Riddick in 3,107 U.S. theaters while eOne Entertainment will distribute in Canada. Based on matinee trends, pic is looking to open with $8M Friday and #1 but only $19.2M for the weekend even though it has this first fall weekend all to itself. That’s after Thursday night’s domestic late shows and Friday’s midnights proved unimpressive with $900K. This 3rd episode may not interest fanboys anymore since the character hasn’t been featured in a film in 9 years. Although the galactic outlaw has been featured in a succession of DVDs and video games as well as the 2 previous films. Written and directed (again) by David Twohy,Riddick follows 2000′s Pitch Black which earned $39.5M and then 2004′s The Chronicles Of Riddick whose bloated budget made $57.8M gross.
