Mamie Gummer gives a moving performance as a young woman (Sophie) who leaves her boyfriend and a comfortable life in Beverly Hills to relocate to Echo Park to find some perspective on her life. It’s not clear why she chose Echo Park but that detail is irrelevant to the story, as we are caught up with Sophie’s internal struggle; which becomes more complicated when she meets Akex (Tony Okungbowa) a British expat about to leave for England.  Echo Park serves as the backdrop as Sophie gets in tune with her neighborhood and developing new friendships. Her relationship with Alex builds and as his departure is looming it’s clear each of them have some choices to make.

Directed by Amanda Marsalis and written by Catalina Aguilar Mastretta, Echo Park is a gem of a film that shows the love of community and for many of us sometimes  leaving is a new beginning.

Produced by Anthony Okungbowa and Eric Hayes, the film also stars Maurice Compte, Ricky Rico, Gale Harold, Helen Slater.
