‘You’re Not You’ In Theaters Now
Academy Award® winner Hilary Swank (Conviction, Million Dollar Baby) and rapidly rising star Emmy Rossum (“Shameless”)intertwine in You’re Not You, a surprisingly funny, defiantly unsentimental and starkly moving portrait of a high-stakes friendship between two women – one literally in need of a voice, the other discovering the full power of hers.
Two-time Tony Award winner and theatre legend George C. Wolfe directs this powerful portrait of a transformational friendship with a cast that includes Emmy Award winner Loretta Devine, Ernie Hudson, Frances Fisher, Oscar® winner Marcia Gay Harden, Emmy nominee Jason Ritter, Julian McMahon, Ali Larter, and Andrea Savage.
We love this film, from the opening dinner scene you fall in love with this seemingly perfect happy couple and you want to know more about them. Kate gives a beautiful piano performance towards the end of the dinner party and the camera slowly pans to her shaking hands as the screen fades to black. So it becomes a shock when the next frame goes right to Kate(Hilary) who is now with ALS while her handsome husband Evan(Josh) lovingly and carefully is applying her makeup.
From there this film will take you on a roller coaster of emotions as we journey with Kate and her disease. The breakdown of her marriage and her struggle to accept her fate. Especially endearing, though not likable at first is Bec(played by Emmy Rossum) who Kate chooses to be her caregiver against her husband wishes. Bec is brash, wilful and full of insecurities and yet these two women form a bond that is such so powerful to watch. I love how George C. Wolf continued to add layers to all these characters making us feel for every one of them. He does not shy away from Evan’s betrayal and his inability to see his wife die; he makes us feel Evan’s pain and decisions without judging him too harshly. Kate and Bec form a bond that is done so organically on film and their chemistry is brilliant to watch. I see Oscar nominations ahead for ‘You’re Not You’.
