Former Celebrity Basketball Wife and Author Carlita Hodges, has come forward to candidly recount her abusive marriage in an effort to help other women and men understand the warning signs, mental abuse and dangers associated with being involved with an abusive individual. She does not think of herself as a victim, rather a survivor of her tumultuous ten-year marriage to former Chicago Bulls guard Craig Hodges, that once labeled her as “One of the 12 Craziest Ex-wives of Pro-Athletes.” It took more than two decades for Carlita to share her side of the story and reclaim her power.
In her transparent memoir, ‘Carlita’s Way:Out Of The Dark Into The Light, My Journey’ Carlita is not afraid to admit mistakes she made and red flags she ignored. The purpose of the Purple Bottom Foundation is to bring more awareness to the domestic violence that athletes wives endure but feel they are unable to escape.
There are many women and men who endure abuse daily, whether physically or mentally, but they need courage and support to be able to break free and leave. After the bruises have healed, the real healing must begin within. Carlita knows this process personally and shares her experiences, mistakes, and ultimate triumph after ending her marriage. Carlita Hodges’ former husband Craig Hodges used his money, influence, and power to bully Carlita, make false accusations that had her children removed from her custody, and suppress her side of the story for many years. After months of fighting with lawyers, and suffering emotional abuse and manipulation by Craig, Carlita eventually regained custody of her children.
“When I won my children back, it was very challenging for me because I was a single mom raising two sick little boys, and even though I had job skills, employment opportunities for me were scarce because of the negative publicity concerning my marriage with Craig. Although times were hard, I didn’t give up hope and pressed forward because I knew that God had something good in store for me and my children and I was destined to live my purpose,” says Carlita. Part of that purpose is helping others escape and overcome domestic violence, and heal from the deep wounds they leave.
With more than 4,000 annual deaths attributed to domestic violence, Carlita is compelled to share her story and help others walk away from abusive relationships. She also understands that gaining the courage to leave is only the beginning of the battle, and wants to help women and men walk away with dignity and respect. Carlita is an advocate and speaker for those whose voices often go unheard. To purchase tickets visit: Please click the link for your ticket!
