There is so much to relate to in this beautifully written movie about the struggles of being a young teenager. The story is universal but unique to the filmmakers’ experience. Directed and written by Diane Kurys,  Peppermint Soda is a reflection of the sweet sometimes bitter experience of youth. It is 1963 France the lives of Anne (Eléonore Klarwein) and Frederique (Odile Michel) are in flux with shuffling between divorced parents and a school that feels like they are attending a nunnery, Diane Kurys has put her finger on the pulse and heart about the insecurities of growing up.

Anne (Eléonore Klarwein) and Frederique (Odile Michel)

From discussing periods and schoolmates acting like they know about sex along with some teachers that should be in mental institutions ‘Peppermint Soda’ is delightful to watch.

Its a window into the world of everyday life that manages to strike a strong emotional cord and for this reviewer it brought similar memories of my youth. The scene where Anne’s mother won’t allow her to wear stockings though Anne insists that her schoolmates are making fun of her reminded me so much of my mother telling me I was not allowed to wear lipstick till I was sixteen. So many moments in this film will impact the viewer in a unique way that is not just a coming of age movie; it’s a slice of life film that will make the viewer reflect on youth and the emotional landscape that comes with growing up.

‘Peppermint Soda’is the perfect movie to end your summer, its an hour and 42 minutes you won’t regret.
