The Predator had the potential to be a good end of Summer sci-fi action flick. Director and Writer Shane Black known as a pioneer in the action genre attempts to deliver a fast-moving action packed movie. It starts off with true promise but somehow along the way the concept felt a bit muddled with moments of dialogue feeling a tad too cheesy.

In this installment of the franchise, a Predator crashes on earth right in the middle of a CIA Mission. Quinn McKenna(Boyd Holbrook) and his men are caught in an attack and after the dust settles McKenna confiscates the Predator’s gear and mails back to his home(supposedly to have as evidence that he had alien contact). Needless to say when his autistic young son Rory(Jacob Tremblay) opens the box and thinks its a video..well all hell breaks loose.

Back at the army base Quinn is now considered a liability and is sequestered off with a group of psychologically damaged of soldiers with ailments ranging from PSTD, Tourettes Syndrome, anger management issues to socially inappropriate behavior.

Olivia Munn plays the science teacher(Casey Brackett) called in to help them understand more about this newest visitor salvaged from the crash site. And Sterling K. Brown (playing the gum chewing evil military bad guy Will Traeger ) who will do anything to harness the alien’s technology. So it is not surprising that the motley crew of the government’s reject is left to save humanity from The Predator and power-hungry government officials.

There are some fun comedic dialogue but overall not anything special in terms of superior acting by the cast though they are all talented actors.  I mean it was all about trying to kill and survive and there is a lot of killing in this movie. Toward the end the storyline gets a bit choppy with some special effects not well presented and frankly a tad confusing trying to figure out who actually got killed.
However, nothing will taint the legacy of the original 1987 “Predator movie” which is truly a cult classic. Just don’t expect the same impact from this latest installment.

“The Predator” stars: Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Jake Busey, Yvonne Strahovski

Opens Nationwide in theaters Friday, September 14th.
