I had the chance to chat with María Elisa Camargo about her role in the upcoming action-thriller Off the Grid, and let me say—she lights up the screen. From the moment she appears, you’re drawn to her character. There’s something honest, fiery, and real in her performance that makes you root for her instantly.

Interview With María Elisa Camargo

Written by Jim Agnew and directed by Johnny Martin, Off the Grid follows Guy (Josh Duhamel), a scientist who disappears into a remote town to hide a stolen experiment from a ruthless corporate villain, Belcor (Peter Stormare). But of course, hiding out doesn’t stay simple for long, especially when Belcor sends in Guy’s former mentor, Ranish (Greg Kinnear), and a lethal strike team led by Marcus (Ricky Russert) to hunt him down.

Guy tries to blend into the forgotten town, keeping his head down and only venturing out for supplies. He strikes up quiet conversations with Chase (Michael Zapesotsky), a sharp teen working at the general store, and Josey (María Elisa Camargo), who runs the local tavern and B&B. There’s a clear spark between Guy and Josey, but with so much at stake, he’s doing his best to keep a low profile.

Now, Off the Grid isn’t trying to reinvent the action-thriller wheel, and no, it’s not packed with wall-to-wall fight scenes—but that’s part of its charm. What makes this one worth watching is the chemistry between the characters, especially the growing connection between Guy, Chase, and Josey. María told me she loved playing Josey because the director gave her room to improvise and bring her energy to the role, and you can feel that authenticity on screen.

Watching Josh Duhamel use a mix of brains and muscle to take on gun-wielding mercenaries is satisfying, but what stands out is the film’s heart. Sometimes an action movie doesn’t need to be all punches and explosions to hit home—it just needs characters you care about and a story with stakes that matter. In the end, it all comes down to one question: chase power or do what’s right?

Released by Lionsgate, Off the Grid hits theaters, on demand, and digital on June 27, 2025.

Cast: Josh Duhamel, Greg Kinnear, Peter Stormare, María Elisa Camargo, Ricky Russert, and Michael Zapesotsky.
