Last night, the 2025 Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF) launched its 26th annual celebration of cinema. The opening night was unforgettable. The evening began with a live recording of The Hollywood Reporter’s acclaimed “Awards Chatter” podcast. It was hosted by Scott Feinberg. The podcast honored Jacob Elordi with the prestigious Maverick Award.NBFF proudly honored Elordi with the Maverick Award for his impressive body of work that encompasses both film and television.
This year, Elordi stars as the iconic creature. This is in Netflix’s highly anticipated Guillermo del Toro adaptation, “Frankenstein.” It is the Closing Night film of NBFF. The film made its world debut at Venice Film Festival, to rave reviews. It was followed by TIFF where it won the First Runner Up for the TIFF People’s Choice Award.

This experiment ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation. A retelling of the classic novel about what it means to be human, to crave love, and seek understanding.
Elordi is known for his performances in “Saltburn,” “Priscilla,” and “The Narrow Road the Deep North.” He has also starred in “Euphoria,” “On Swift Horses,” and “Oh Canada.” Next, audiences can see Elordi in Emerald Fennel’s “Wuthering Height” and Ridley Scott’s “The Dog Stars”.He received this for his fearless and compelling performances. These performances continue to redefine modern stardom.
After the live podcast, guests enjoyed the premiere of Renée Zellweger’s directorial debut short film, “They.” This occurred before the highly anticipated opening night screening of “Blue Moon.”

The Newport Beach Film Festival was founded in 1999 by Gregg Schwenk and Todd Quartararo. It has grown from a modest local event into one of Southern California’s premier film festivals. Initially held in late April, the festival transitioned to October in 2022 to align with the Oscar season.Over the years, NBFF has showcased over 350 films annually, attracting more than 58,000 attendees.
