Charu Suri

Indo-American pianist and composer Charu Suri—widely recognized for weaving Indian ragas into contemporary jazz—has received a GRAMMY® nomination for her album SHAYAN in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category for the 68th Grammy Awards.

Adding to the milestone, Suri is also recognized as a co-producer on Sounds of Kumbha (Best Global Music Album), expanding her GRAMMY®-recognized work across multiple categories and collaborations.

“I always want to be on top of my game and create music that is healing, relaxing, but also lends itself to being innovative and always be ahead of the pack.” — Charu Suri

Suri’s signature style—often described as “raga jazz”—draws from Indian classical frameworks while speaking in the language of contemporary instrumental music. Her work has been celebrated for being fresh, inventive, and relevant, pairing meditative raga-inspired motifs with modern harmony and improvisation. Her momentum has been matched by major live highlights, including a fifth appearance at Carnegie Hall (Weill Recital Hall).

Over the past year, she has also performed widely across the U.S. and internationally—appearing in festivals and iconic jazz rooms—while continuing to bring her raga-driven approach to new audiences. Suri’s album SHAYAN has been credited with strong chart performance, and her broader catalog has helped define a new sonic identity for a rising wave of Indian and Indian diaspora jazz creators.

Her work has also intersected with notable artists and institutions—spanning jazz, orchestral, and cross-genre spaces—including collaborators such as Yo-Yo Ma, New Jersey Symphony, Steve Gadd, John Patitucci, and Joe Lastie. Suri also serves in leadership within the Recording Academy, underscoring her growing influence both onstage and within the industry.

The 68th GRAMMY® season has also spotlighted the expanding global impact of Indian and Indian-origin creators, with multiple nominations across global and instrumental categories—including artists such as Anoushka Shankar, fusion group Shakti, and composer-producer Siddhant Bhatia.
