In 1929, Raymond Borremans left Europe for Africa, spending a half-century there and trying to create the continent’s first encyclopedia, but only reaching the letter “N” before his death. This magical film blurs the line between fiction and documentary, using the eccentric Frenchman’s life – and afterlife – as a jumping-off point to examine the complex relationship between Western academic traditions, the mysteries of the African continent and the legacy of colonialism.
