On Thursday, Dec 8th, Donelle Dadigan and The Hollywood Museum along with city officials and several child stars of today hosted 200+ children from the Dolores Mission School (info below) to a very special Christmas celebration, guided tour of the museum and lunch at Mel’s Diner in Hollywood.
Among those attended and offered words of encouragement and wisdom to the students were Aubrey Anderson-Emmons and Chad Roberts (Modern Family), Ashley Liao (Fuller House), Hunter Peyten (A to Z), Jennifer Jolliff (Sisters), Joey Luthman (Astrid / Strings / GH), Serena Laurel (Short Girls Club), Jax Malcolm (Hidden America), Sean-Ryan Petersen (Clique Wars), as well as Council member Mitch O’Farrell, President of California Senate Kevin de Leon and a very special speaker, Dee Wallace (ET: The Extra Terrestrial / Just Add Magic), who presented select students with BuppaLaPaloo Bears (www.buppalapaloo.com/) that she designed to increase self esteem in the children.
In the early 1950s Dolores Mission School opened in one of the toughest and poorest neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Dolores Mission School was founded to serve families in two housing projects in the flats of Boyle Heights, Pico Garden and Las Casitas, whereby families pay roughly 30% of their income for rent, 92.3% of the population is Latino, and 40% of families with children, most of which are single-parent households, live below the federal poverty level. While this information is both disturbing and true, Dolores Mission School is a place of hope. Since the 1980s the California Province of Society of Jesus, the Jesuits, have committed to the challenges and hopes of the school. Today, Dolores Mission is a place of promise for the future, providing a quality education to students K-8th grades, a nutritional program, and we partner with Proyecto Pastoral to provide an afterschool program that is educational, safe, and fun!

The Dolores Mission School never turns a family away due to lack of money. Our students and their families are part of a larger faith community with a rich cultural identity. As an itegral part of a Jesuit parish, our goal is to empower our children to become leaders in their community.
