The hosts discuss a new poll revealing a record 5.6% of US adults identify as LGBTQ. Elaine Welteroth says, “I applaud Gen Z for how self-expressive, how accepting they are…they are ushering in an acknowledgement, and awareness of something that has always been true. Gay people, LGBTQ people have always been a part of our history, across the world. But, they haven’t always been able to openly identify as such and part of that is a lack of acceptance in society, all over the world. The other part of that is language. We didn’t have the language to even self-identify as LGBTQ for so long. As language evolves, so does our understanding of self and identify and the spectrum of identities.” She adds, “I want to say that Caitlyn Jenner, for all the complexity on that story, Caitlyn Jenner ushered in an awareness into pop culture of trans identity, in a specific way that I think it forced us to see these people have been put into the margins of our society for too long. And seeing Caitlyn Jenner on the cover of Vanity Fair…for a lot of people that was a moment where, it was like, finally we’re seeing someone that is representative of so many unseen people.”
