In “What You Wish For,” written and directed by Nicholas Tomnay, we follow Ryan (Nick Stahl), a talented chef with a serious gambling problem. Seeking a fresh start, he leaves town and heads to an unnamed Latin American country to visit his successful chef friend, Jack (Brian Groh). Upon arrival, Ryan is blown away by Jack’s luxurious lifestyle—a stunning house, a beautiful pool, and sprawling grounds. It’s the kind of life Ryan dreams of, though he tries not to let his envy show.
Everything spells luxury, and Ryan needs to know how Jack got this fabulous gig. Jack knows Ryan has a gambling problem and hopes he has it under control. However, Ryan’s restrained desperation and terror surface when he receives alarming texts. His gambling problem has followed him to this hideaway, and it’s time to pay up. Jack finally explains that he prepares dinner menus for wealthy clients and gets paid well. While Ryan is pleased for Jack, he can’t help he deserves the same opportunity.
Nick Stahl delivers a compelling performance as Ryan, capturing the character’s desperation and longing with authenticity. Stahl’s nuanced portrayal of a man on the edge, struggling to escape his past, is relatable and engaging. Brian Groh, as Jack, says a lot without words, and his fleeting moments of inner conflict are powerful. His chemistry with Stahl adds depth to their friendship, making their interactions genuine and heartfelt.
The supporting cast also deserves recognition. Tamsin Topolski(Imogene)plays a pivotal role as Jack’s Boss. Direct and specific with a calm intensity that can send chills down the spine adding a layer of suspense to the narrative. Randy Vasquez (Detective Ruiz) appears as a local law enforcement officer, bringing a mix of authority and unpredictability to the film. His presence adds to the tension and thrills, especially during the film’s climactic moments.
As the story progresses, Tomnay expertly balances tension and humor. Even though some plot points are predictable, it doesn’t diminish the excitement. Without giving too much away, when Ryan gets a chance to step into Jack’s shoes and prepare a dinner for a high-profile client, things take a dramatic turn. When law enforcement shows up, complications arise, and Ryan faces a critical moment that could make or break his future.
Tomnay’s film also delves into themes of morality and choices, making you think about where to draw the line. He explores human vices and the havoc wreaked by our actions, prompting viewers to reflect on the consequences of their own decisions. “What You Wish For” is not just a suspenseful thriller but a thought-provoking narrative on the complexities of human nature.
Nicholas Tomnay’s “What You Wish For” is a captivating film that keeps you on the edge of your seat, blending suspense and dark comedy that is entertaining and thought-provoking. The strong performances from the cast, particularly Nick Stahl and Brian Groh, elevate the story, making it a memorable watch.
